“If I could give more than five (5) stars, I would! My experience with Signs for San Diego was nothing less than exceptional from start to finish. As a Project Manager for one of Gable’s largest clients, I expect our vendors to deliver high-quality product and/or services.”
We got both of our restaurant signs from them, and we couldn’t be happier! They were affordable, had incredible customer service, and the quality of their product matches their customer service! They even took care of some of our street light issues at no additional charge since they were already on-site with the lift!
They have a new customer for life!
You may think Address numbers are boring, but there are some surprising and interesting things you may not know about Address Signs.
Carlsbad Signs makes Address signs. These signs are purchased for a few reasons: Buildings being built need them to pass the fire inspection, The originals are falling apart, the building gets painted and most interesting – a sharp owner realizes they can be used to attract attention. Let’s go through these and see how you can take advantage of each situation
Carlsbad Signs replaces address signs on commercial and industrial buildings all the time. Why? Birds!! Birds are clawing away at your Address Numbers.
It is a material problem. Birds love to claw and peck. They love this. The foam is ideal for this. In the 1980s foam letters and numbers become popular with builders. These numbers were cheaper. The costs of foam and a new popularization on how to cut it – the hot wire, caught on. When a bird takes a few chunks out of the top, the number is exposed to UV (Ultraviolet radiation) from the sun. Foam’s resistance to sun is not good, degrading your address numbers.
Birds don’t eat foam; they peck and claw at it.
Birds perch on the top of letters with good surfaces for them “0”s, “4”s, “6”s, “8”s and “9”s. The top is where the deterioration always is. To stop this signs companies, paint the edges (cost), better yet they stucco the edges (more cost) and lastly they place bird spikes on the tops (most cost and looks bad). Mitigation is not needed if the right address sign is used in the first place.
Address numbers are always in an inconvenient spot. They are placed to be visible. They should look sharp, There are really 2 materials that are the best.
Address Signs should be made out of Acrylic in a routed letter or aluminum in a fabricated letter. Acrylic is a stable material, birds do not like it, and it is durable. In addition, unpainted it has a shine and painted it is still long lasting (get the right paint). The only issue with acrylic is the expansion and contraction as the temperature changes (like daytime and nighttime) does not match the building and large letters can delaminate. This becomes a serious problem with big numbers. A 12” number should be no problem, but an 18” letter facing south – likely will be a problem. Fabricated numbers (aluminum in all cases) are the most durable, the most attractive and the most expensive. Fabricated numbers also can be huge, they are the best address numbers.
Builders have a budget and they have a site superintendent. The “super’s” job is to cut costs and deliver the building as in expensively as possible.
They order materials at the lowest price possible. The builder makes more money that way, but you actually spend a lot more. The cost of Address Numbers is mostly in the install. Super’s mostly order foam letters (because this is the lowest price letter or number available). But birds (yes birds) land on the letters and claw them until they fall apart.
Once a bird opens up the top of the letter, the sun and moister finished the job. At this point the building owner will be beyond the warranty and need to replace these numbers. Getting a new set of numbers is not expensive. Carlsbad Signs makes and sells these all the time, but getting an aerial lift, a bucket truck, or worse a crane up there to install the new set is several hundred dollars. Crane work can be in the thousands. Not a great justification for saving a small amount by purchasing the lowest price letters. Obviously the sharp buyer will specify a better quality Address Signs and avoid a major expense later.
These bold address numbers help identify the buildings. Address Numbers are required by the fire code. They are not only not subject to the sign ordinances. They have no maximum size restriction. Having large, bold and colorful numbers is allowed. This helps a building to stand out.
The clever building owner know this increases the value of the building, it is better known, can be found faster and easier. Customers and prospective tenants find it more accessible – Increased visibility increases value.
This application used a large Aluminum plate and the numbers are cutouts with the color of the building showing through. It creates a great and unique look.
Each of these numbers are Aluminum construction, with welded Aluminum sides and bolts welding inside that have all thread rods screwed in the back. These rods fit holes we drilled into he wall. This stud mount allows for each building address in mounted this way.
