They are seen on churches, synagogues, resorts, legal offices, restaurants, high end retailers and others that wish to stand out against a sea of standard channel letter sets. What are Halo Channel letters?
Channel letters are illuminated letters. These letters are constructed from Aluminum with an acrylic back with LEDs mounted and facing inward.
The light bounces off the inside and back out the back of the letter. This floods light on the wall behind the letter. One can see these on many businesses. They are different from front face lighting or the normal channel letter. These are used because they attract attention. They attract prospects and customers through your front door.

We can make a set for your too. Unlike normal channel letters many of these are made by hand.
That is the automation we have to make a normal channel letter does not work well with this type of letter. Each side or return is MIG aluminum welded to the face. The backs are clear and have LEDs mounted. They require standoffs to creates a gap between the letter and the wall. The distance controls how far the light spreads out. The whole letter is rather special.

Channel letters come in all sizes and shapes
Halo letters can be made in many fonts, from 6” to 6’, with a lot of variations. In many ways the letters are mostly limited by our imaginations. However, there are a few constraints. The distance from the letter to the wall is important. The texture and consistency of the wall is critical. The face can be a solid or light up. The letters cannot be too “pointy” or the LEDs will not fit. So, there are some considerations.
Channel letters lighting
10 years ago, there was still a lot of Neon. Today nearly 100% of the channel letter lighting is from LEDs. LEDs come in various colors.
For Halo letters a white light is not required, Red and Blue are very popular. This can give the letters a unique and sticking light at night. Also, LEDs are sealed against weather. Halo Letters are not able to protect the light source as well as front lit letters. With the new LED technology this is not a problem. The wiring must exit the back. It is more exposed than a front lit channel letter set. Also, the standoffs can be seen from directly below the letters. All of these issues and the hand build means halo letters look more expensive…and they are.
Halo letters have different names
Halo letters are called “Halo” because they form a halo of light around them. But this is not the only name you find used. Reverse channel letters simply means the light exist in the reverse direction. Back lit channel letters also is used.
