Paper

The use of paper is obvious and deep in the history. Its use in signage is very limited. It is a poor outdoor material; it is not a lot better inside. Paper is consumable and thought of as a use and lose medium. There are a lot of different types of paper that leads to non-cellulous roll media – namely vinyl.

History

Paper existed in China in 200 B.C., It is highly related to drawing and writing. Writings can be found on stone, clay tablets, papyrus, parchment and vellum. Parchment is made from the untanned skins of sheep, calves or goats. Papyrus is plant based. Paper started as a mix of tree cellulose, and shredded cloth with water. It is pounded into a pulp, poured into a press and the water removed. Set out in the sun to dry and you have paper

Paper is measured by weight and finish

A 20 pound paper – the weight of 500 sheets of paper (17×22 inches) is 20lbs. Of course, this measurement does not directly relate to the paper (11X8.5”) actually use, but that is the measurement. Paper has different finishes Specifically Smooth: 1) smooth finish 2) embossed or lined 3) felt finish, 4) Vellum and 5) coated. Uncoated paper is commonly used in Copy Paper, Newspaper, Envelopes and many Printed materials, Coated paper comes in several forms 1) Varnish Coating this comes in matte, satin, and gloss finishes. It is a protective overlay, 2) UV Coating for sun protection and resistance to yellowing 3) Aqueous Coating that are smudge resistance 4) Laminate Coating to give texture

Sign Uses of Paper

In theory, there are endless sign applications, but in practice there is only one. Paper is roll form is used as a pattern material. We print patterns that are used to attach to walls, and have holes and marks made on that wall. Using these holes and marks other materials like dimensional letters and channel letters can be mounted in exactly the right place. The paper is then thrown away – its purpose fulfilled.
