These guys did a phenomenal job on a lobby sign for my husband’s dental practice it turned out better then we could have imagined.
Frank and his team were efficient and very helpful even though we were indecisive about exactly what we wanted. They showed us many samples at their facility and did a pre-design to make sure we were happy. They were also extremely professional and efficient with installation.
If you are looking for any kind of sign service I highly recommend going with these guys!
We got both of our restaurant signs from Signs for San Diego, and we couldn’t be happier!
They were affordable, had incredible customer service, and the quality of their product matches their customer service! They even took care of some of our street light issues at no additional charge since they were already on-site with the lift!
They have a new customer for life!
Shopping mall Monument Signs come in all sizes and shapes. They are used in high traffic areas to pull traffic into shopping centers. This generally means they are on corners, busy streets and near entrances. They are targeted for visibility from cars and from traffic rich areas. They also have multiple shops or tenants displayed. Each display is called a tenant panel. Generally, the anchor tenants are at the top and the smaller retail outlets are at the bottom. The Shopping Center Monument’s sole purpose is as a business tool.
These Monuments pull traffic off streets and into the retail shopping center, the parking lot or the driveways.
All shopping malls are designed for retail sales. That is the monument sign’s purpose is to attract business. So how can YOU use these signs?
Put your company’s name on that sign. This often means asking the property manager for that space. Property managers know that traffic flow related directly to revenue. They know the value of having your name on that monument sign. The allocate these spaces carefully. They may charge for the space. They may be open during the lease or lease renewal period/s more than other times. You want that space, it is valuable
Monument signs can be 50 years old or 50 days old. Older monuments generally have florescent lamps. These require maintenance. The lamps burn up and the ballast will fail at some age.
This is a maintenance issue. If you have a monument with these older florescent lamps, and one fails, one excellent idea is to replace them all. These lamps all fail about the same time. The cost of service is high, the cost of the lamps is fairly low. Don’t risk a 2nd service call, do them all at once. The older ballast are magnetic, these are unavailable now. You will get electronic ballast (because that is all that is available). This will sales you electrical cost. So, is it a good idea to get new florescent lamps and electronic ballast? Maybe but what about LEDs
All new monuments will have LEDs as the monument light source. There is a reason for this. The life of a florescent lamp is about 7000 hours (about 3 ½ years are 2000 hours a year) LEDs have a life of about 50,000 hours (about 25 years).
This alone pays for the LEDs as an upgrade. But there is more. LEDs are brighter, they are more consistent and they look better. So why would anybody use florescent lamps? Increasingly there is no reason. Nearly every monument made today will have LED internal lighting. The only reason to not do this is for a special look and feel, which probably means neon.
In nearly all cases these are an aluminum stick frame or skeleton with an aluminum skin. Internally, they all have steel pipes running up the center. They are MiG welded frame and skin construction. While this is the construction you will almost always see, the shapes and coatings vary greatly. Shapes are often attention getters. Curves, or cantilevered areas are common. The surface is also varied. In many cases bases will be brick or stone clade. These stone and brick layers are generally thin and bonded to the aluminum. The aluminum skins are generally stucco sprayed and painted. These and other surface treatments are the norm for the body of the Monument Signs. The faces or panels are interesting
There are a number of types of faces or tenant panels. The most common panel is a sheet of “Sign white” acrylic. That is a translucent sheet of 3/16 or 1/8 inch thick rectangle sized to the opening. On top of this is translucent vinyl. There are 2 types, digital print and cut vinyl. Cut vinyl is generally longer life, but digital can capture photographs or detail or many colors, fades and other color variations. The 2nd most common type is sub surface acrylic under a routed aluminum panel.
These are pans or sliders. A router, water jet or laser cuts the letters and logos into this sheet. The acrylic panel behind the face is translucent and the light shins through. The 3rd common face is a “push through”. This is the acrylic is routed or shaped to poke through the routed areas (holes) is the aluminum.
All Shopping mall monument signs have a foundation or footer. Most all have a steel pipe or two the support the monument sign. These are bolted or welded with a “saddle”. The footings are generally pretty deep. The exact depth is normally determined by a PE or Professional Engineer.
These can be 4 foot deep on the low side and 10-12 feet on the deeper side. Larger Monument Signs have larger footings. In most cases a spread footing is possible. Basically, the depth can be substituted for a width.
Every monument is drawn out. These drawings specify the materials and construction. Because the structure of the sign is the strength and durability, it is important to use an experienced and qualified manufacturer. Better manufacturers will always have metal brakes, welders, routers and other equipment.
They will have an Underwriters Laboratory certification for the electrical requirements. The welding can be done with certified welders or a fabrication certifications. We have an LA Fab Cert.
