We couldn’t be happier!
Channel letters Being Built

We got both of our restaurant signs from them, and we couldn’t be happier!  They were affordable, had incredible customer service, and the quality of their product matches their customer service!  They even took care of some of our street light issues at no additional charge since they were already on-site with the lift!

They have a new customer for life!

Wood for Sandblasting

Sandblasted signs use 3 substrate materials. These are Redwood, Cedar and HDU.  Just looking at the wood, here is what you should know about Redwood and Cedar. For HDU, check out the HDU page.

Wood for Sandblasted Signs

Redwood Sandblasted Signs

Redwood is the “go to” wood for sandblasted signs. People want it and it does blast well, looks great, often has interesting grain structure and makes great signs. It is also a historic craftsman manufacturing. It takes a lot of time to find the wood, mask it, blast it and hand paint it.  Be prepared for pricing that reflects the time involved. In the 1850s, labor hours were worth a lot less than in the 2020s with California’s labor laws. In other words, Sandblasted signs are old world signs, for specific uses in historic areas or a very specific look. Dollar for dollar, these are expensive signs.

Termites do not like Redwood

Termites do not like Redwood, well, kind of. Redwood has natural protection to termite infestation, forest fires and rot. This is not uniform through all parts of the tree. Termites can and will do damage to Redwood. Redwood has a bark containing tannic acid that protects the tree. Termites will not eat through the bark; these acids repel termites. In nature, the bark protects the tree (from fire, termites and moister that can start rot). In signage, the bark has been removed and the protection with it. There are still Tannic acids in the wood, but in lower concentrations on the outer rings and higher on the inner, center, heartwood rings. The heartwood (center of the tree) is better protected than the outer layers, older trees are better protected than younger trees. The heartwood is also the denser grain, termites cannot eat dense wood. So old growth heartwood with high tannic acid concentrations are resistance to termites. However, farm grown new growth: normally about 50 years old or less, is faster growing, less dense and has less tannic acid. Redwood found in lumberyard boards is not termite’s preferred meal, but not totally protective either. The preferred wood for signs and sandblasting is old growth Redwood, but….

Old Growth Redwood

California’s old-growth Redwood trees grow up to 300 feet and can be very old, up to 2,000 years.  These were harvested in the 1800s through the 1970s. Modern environmental laws combined with the purchase of most of the remaining Redwood forest for public parks basically made old growth redwood lumber unobtainable or at least unaffordable. Nearly all redwood lumber sold today is under 50 years old. It is fast growing, large, grained sawmill cut lumber for construction. Uniform, and largely less interesting for woodworkers and sign makers looking for unique and attractive wood. Old growth Redwood has more character, the grain is smaller and more interesting. Old growth redwood is legally protected. Nobody cuts old growth trees down in mass and rarely at all, so the supply is from trees harvested many years ago or trees removed because they died, were damaged or were in the way of some government development . There is some movement to thin out some areas that were stripped for lumber 70-150 years ago, but don’t count on it. Sources for Old growth Redwood are rare and unreliable.
