The board is subjected to a stream of sand that wears the wood down everywhere there is no mask. The mask is removed and the sealing and painting start. The finished sign is a three-dimensional look that is attractive and visually striking.
Appreciating the Process
How do we get there? It is a labor intensive process. Redwood, Cedar and a High Density Urethan are the base materials.
This is shaped into a blank you prefer. Ovals, rectangles are common, but other shapes are very possible and appealing. Because this is generally wood there are size and thickness limitations the craftsman has worked around for centuries. These remain today – most of these signs are on the small side.
Bounce pad
Your message, style and font are cut from a rubber mash. When the stream of sand hits the rubber, it bounces off.
When that same stream hits wood, it knocks off a little tiny chuck of wood. The removal is not exact, and fine features like sharp pointed lines, delicate details and very small features are limited. Sand Blasted signs tend to be big, bold and block like. It is the technique used that demands this.
Paint
After the blasting is complete, the wood is a little dirty and the mash is generally falling apart.
The mash is removed and the piece cleaned. Then a sealer coat of paint is applied. This is the easy paint layer. The next layers are hand painted. Each letter, boarder or other feature is carefully brush painted without mask. The amount of labor, the cost of the raw materials (wood and paint) and the time makes these signs rather special.
