Pylon Signs
Pylon signs are freestanding signs and are single or double sided. They are supported by one or two poles. The poles are steel and the sign cabinets are normally Aluminum. These are old school signs and in many cities they are no longer favored. The existing pylon signs are likely not replaceable under current sign ordinances. But they are effective. If you can buy on or use one, you have a great marketing tool

Pylon signs are known as pole signs, Road Signs, Highway Signs billboards and maybe others. It is a family of signs and there is a lot of overlap.
The word Pylon is from the Greek. It means gateway. Today it is more accurately referred to as a large steel pole mounted in concrete, normally substantial foundation. Sign is this case, means cabinet. So, a Pylon sign is a cabinet on a pole. No matter what you call it, a pylon sign is a great marketing tool
What is the difference between a pylon and a monument?
Pylon and monument signs are very similar. Pylon signs have air under them. Monument signs reach the ground. In many cases a monument sign is a Pylon with a skirt to bring it down. In the case where there are 2 poles and a cover, they may be the same thing. In other words, they may be the same thing, or variations of each other. A monument is on the ground, A pylon is in the air, Signs that are in between are both.
What is the difference between a pylon and a pole sign?
Pylon Signs are pole signs.
The term pole sig is more generic, and boarder. Pole signs can be on smaller poles. In other words, small pole, poles mounted into the ground without concrete and now pylon signs. In many cases the rems are interchangeable.
Faces in Pylon Signs
There are 3 types of faces in pylon signs, Acrylic, Polycarbonate, and panaflex (Also known as flex face). Each of these has certain characteristics. Acrylic is limited to 4 X 8 foot face or smaller. This is the maximum common size for Acrylic.
If the face is bigger is can be Polycarbonate on Lexan. These can be up to 16 foot tall and much wider. The limitation on these is weight. A 10 X 4.5 foot face weighs 50 pounds. At about 65 pounds it gets very difficult to handle a face in the air. A canvas face or flex face or panaflex face weights 13Oz / yard or one eighth what polycarbonate.
Why are Pylon Signs Out Of Favor?
Why are pylon signs out of favor? Pylon signs are taller and found favor on the sides of roads and highways.
They are pure function. They are meant to be seen from a distance. As cities become denser and more refined, they tend to reject pole signs as ugly, too large and old looking. Maybe they are, but in their basic function – attracting attention, they were and still are excellent. Because they are effective, if you have one it is likely grandfathered in. The chances are your permit application for a new pylon will be rejected. These are still built, but outside cities and along highways is most common.
