Vinyl used in signs is a broad topic. The details could fill a book. This is the basic story.

Cast vs Calendared

Cast vinyl is made as a liquid slurry and “cast”. That is the solvents come off and leave a very uniform film. The quality is higher and the shrinkage uniform. Cast is the premium vinyl. It is also much more expensive. It is used in car wraps, and many other high quality applications. Calendared vinyl films are rolled or fed through rollers that thin it out and stretch the more in the long (Y axis) direction than the width (X axis). This results in a different shrinkage in X and Y.

Life of the Vinyl

Vinyl is often rated by the life of the product. 1year, 3 years, 5 years and 7 years. If you have an outdoor sign with a long life the best vinyl is good for 7 years. This may or may not be enough. If a longer life is required, then paint or dimensional lettering may be the better way to go.

Cut vinyl vs digital prints

Cut vinyl comes in colors. Digital print is normally white and sometimes clear. The printed ink is the color. Cut vinyl has some real advantages, the colors are through the entire film. They cannot be scratched off. In translucent applications cut vinyl is the better color filter – by a lot. Cut vinyl is also unable to reproduce photos, use fades or display fine detail. Digital prints can reproduce photos, and have color gradients, or show small features, or have many colors. Which is right for you? It depends.

Different types for different applications

Vinyl types are nearly endless. There are perforated vinyl for windows, cling vinyl for short term advertisements, translucent vinyl for lighted signs, wrap vinyl for auto wraps, banner materials, and a hundred other types.
